Framer vs Webflow vs Next.js: which should a startup use?
Framer vs Webflow vs Next.js for a startup website: launch speed, editing, CMS, motion, SEO, integrations, cost of ownership and when to choose each.
Take the 3-min scorecard- Choose Framer if you need a polished marketing site fast and designers or marketers will edit it.
- Choose Webflow if you publish a lot of structured content and a marketing team edits every week.
- Choose Next.js if the site needs product logic, live demos or deep app integration, and your engineers will own it.
| Factor | Framer | Webflow | Next.js |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed to launch | Fastest. Design and build are close to one step | Fast, a bit slower than Framer for custom layouts | Slowest. Design, then build, then CMS wiring |
| Who edits | Designers and marketers, visually | Marketers in the Editor, designers in the Designer | Developers for layout, marketers through a headless CMS |
| CMS | Good for blogs, case studies and changelogs | Strong. Collections, references and filtering at volume | Anything, through a headless CMS. Most setup |
| Animation | Excellent. Scroll, hover and page transitions are native | Good, with a steeper learning curve | Unlimited, but each animation is engineering time |
| SEO | Solid fundamentals: meta, sitemaps, clean URLs | Solid fundamentals with finer control | Full control, including rendering and structured data |
| Integrations | Embeds, forms and plugins. Little custom logic | Wider ecosystem and more API access | Unlimited. Your app, auth, data and APIs |
| Cost of ownership | Low. Plan fees and little engineering time | Low to moderate. Plan fees and some specialist time | Highest. Hosting is cheap, engineering time isn't |
| Main risk | Outgrowing it if the site becomes an app | Complexity creep in large builds without a system | Marketing waits on engineering for small changes |
When should a startup choose Framer?
- You're launching, rebranding or raising, and the site needs to look credible within weeks.
- Your team is small and designers or marketers make most changes.
- Motion matters to your story.
- Your CMS needs are a blog, case studies, careers and maybe a changelog.
When should a startup choose Webflow?
- You have hundreds of CMS items: posts, integrations pages, templates or glossary terms.
- Content types relate to each other, like authors, categories and product areas.
- Several marketers need to edit safely without breaking layouts.
When should a startup choose Next.js?
- You want live product demos, playgrounds or model outputs on the site.
- The marketing site shares components, auth or data with your product.
- You need programmatic pages built from your own data.
- Your engineering team has the time and the interest to own the site.
What does each cost to own?
Plan fees for Framer and Webflow are small next to build time. The real difference is who has to make changes: a Framer or Webflow site is edited by marketing, while a Next.js site needs engineering time for anything beyond content. We break down build costs in how much a startup website costs.
Can you switch platforms later?
Yes, but it's a rebuild, not an export. Design files and content carry over, while templates, interactions and CMS structure are rebuilt. Map every old URL to its new home with a 301 redirect and carry over titles and metadata, so search traffic follows you.
What do we build in, and why?
We build in Framer, Webflow and Next.js, so we don't have a reason to push one. We pick based on who will edit the site, what it needs to do and how fast it has to ship. For most early-stage marketing sites that's Framer or Webflow. We choose Next.js, or Astro for fast static sites like this one, when the site needs product logic or custom rendering. How much a startup website costs in 2026: typical price ranges for SaaS and AI companies by provider type, what drives cost, and how to scope it properly.
Comparison & answers.
The questions founders ask us about this choice.
Is Framer good for SEO?
Framer handles the fundamentals well: pre-rendered HTML, custom meta tags, clean URLs, sitemaps and fast hosting. For most startup marketing sites it isn't the limiting factor. Content quality and site structure matter more.
Do I need a developer to maintain a Webflow site?
Not for day-to-day content. Marketers can edit pages and CMS items in the Editor. You'll want a Webflow-experienced designer or developer for new templates, complex interactions and structural changes.
Which platform is best for an AI startup?
Most AI startups are well served by Framer or Webflow for the marketing site. Choose Next.js when the site needs live product demos, interactive model outputs or deep integration with your app and auth.
