Does your headline say what you do?

Paste the headline from your homepage, and the line under it if you like. You get five scores in a few seconds, the way a skeptical buyer reads it.

03In short

The headline checker is a free tool from Alterra Studio. It scores one homepage headline on five things a buyer notices in the first seconds: whether it's clear, specific, original, plain and worth reading on. Clarity matters most, because a headline that doesn't say what you do loses people whatever else it gets right.

04What it measures

Clarity
Can a stranger tell what you do and who it's for from these words alone? Counted twice in the overall score.
Specificity
Is there a concrete fact, number, method, audience or outcome, or only a slogan?
Originality
Could the same words sit on hundreds of other homepages?
Plainness
Does it read as a plain statement, or as hype?
Pull
Would a potential customer keep reading?

What it can't do. It reads the words only. It doesn't see your design, your audience research or how the line performs with real visitors, and a model's judgment is a second opinion, not a test with customers. Use it to compare versions, then test the winner with people who buy from you.

About the checker, how it scores and what we keep.

How is my headline scored?

A judgment model, TypeSafe's Jev, reads your headline (and the line under it, if you add one) the way a skeptical buyer would and answers five questions: is it clear, specific, original, plain and worth reading on. Each answer becomes a 0 to 100 score. Clarity counts twice in the overall score because a headline that doesn't say what you do fails whatever else it does.

Is the headline checker free?

Yes. No email and no account. You can run 20 checks an hour.

What do you keep?

The text you paste and its scores, for 24 hours, so the same check comes back instantly. Nothing else is kept, sold or shared.

What makes a good startup headline?

It says what you do and for whom in plain words, includes one specific detail a competitor couldn't copy, and leaves the clever line for the subheading if at all. Pair a short headline with a plain line under it that names the audience and the outcome.

Can it check my whole homepage?

This tool checks one headline. The free Auditvia audit reads your whole homepage, including every line of copy, accessibility, SEO, AI search and speed.
